PE Fusion Joint Testing
The buried joint, judged before burial.
PE fusion joint testing destructively verifies polyethylene pipe joints: electrofusion assemblies by peel decohesion testing (ISO 13954), butt fusion joints by tensile testing of waisted specimens (ISO 13953) and bead assessment. The tests grade the fused interface itself — ductile or brittle — which is what decides whether a joint outlasts the pipeline.

1Section the joint
The fitting or joint is cut into standard strip or waisted specimens — the fusion interface exposed for judgement.
2Peel the electrofusion interface
Strips are progressively peeled through the fused zone under tensile load, forcing the interface to declare itself.
3Read the failure surface
Ductile tearing = sound fusion; smooth brittle separation = cold joint. The brittle percentage is measured against limits.
4Pull the butt joint
Waisted specimens across butt welds are tensile-tested — strength and failure mode recorded.
5Verdict on the crew, not just the coupon
Results validate (or stand down) the welder, machine and procedure before kilometres of joints go in the ground.
The physics
A good PE fusion joint is not glued — it is one material. Done correctly, molten polyethylene from both sides interdiffuses until the interface effectively disappears, and the joint fails, if forced, by tearing ductile parent material. Done badly — contamination, incomplete scraping, wrong parameters, movement during cooling — a plane of weakness remains that looks identical from outside.
Peel decohesion (ISO 13954, for electrofusion fittings ≥90 mm) attacks that plane directly: strip specimens cut through the fitting are progressively peeled at the fused interface, and the exposed surface tells the truth — ductile tearing with drawn material is a sound weld, smooth brittle separation is a cold or contaminated one. The result is expressed as the percentage of brittle decohesion against acceptance limits.
Butt fusion joints answer to the tensile test (ISO 13953): waisted specimens machined across the joint are pulled to failure, with strength and — critically — failure mode recorded: ductile failures in pipe material pass; brittle failure at the fusion plane condemns the jointing, not just the specimen. Alongside bead dimensional checks, these tests turn crew competence into measurable evidence at mobilisation, at intervals, and on suspicion.

Joint testing is performed in Metlab’s laboratories with results reported against the applicable specification — the same organisation that certifies plastics welders to I.S. EN 13067.
How many joints should a project test?
Enough to represent every crew and machine at mobilisation, then at defined intervals and on any suspicion — specification-dependent, but the principle is coverage of the variables that cause failure. Testing one golden joint at the start of a two-year contract proves almost nothing.
What does “percentage brittle decohesion” mean?
After peeling, the exposed fusion surface is assessed: areas that tore ductilely versus areas that separated cleanly at the interface. The brittle fraction is measured against the acceptance limit — it is a direct, quantified grade of fusion quality rather than a pass/fail impression.
Can you test joints cut from a live failure?
Yes — sections from excavated joints are tested and examined to attribute cause: contamination, scraping, parameters, misalignment or third-party damage. The answer usually changes site practice immediately, which is the point.
